Legal Help

There are a few legal organizations in Texas that may be able to help you with your fine-only misdemeanor case and restoring your driver’s license if you cannot afford to hire your own lawyer. Most are only able to help if your income is below a certain level and if you live in their service area.

  • Austin/Central Texas
    • Driver’s License Recovery Project
      • If you're interested, please fill out this survey. Intake sessions are currently held each September and February. Response times between intakes will be slow. Services are currently remote and accessible to people in greater Texas.
    • Mission Waco Legal Assistance Program
      • To ask about legal services, call 254-753-4900 extension 321. 
      • Mission Waco offers a free monthly legal clinic on the third Thursday of the month held on the second floor of the Meyer Center, located at 226 Washington Ave. from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Bring all relevant documents for assistance.
    • Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas
      • Volunteer Legal Services hosts three in-person legal advice clinics most months in the greater Austin area: 
        1. on the second Tuesday of most months at the San Marcos Public Library, located at 625 E. Hopkins St., 
        2. on the second Wednesday of most months at the Ruiz Branch of the Austin Public Library, located at 1600 Groove Rd.,
        3. on the last Wednesday of most months at the St. John Branch of the Austin Public Library, located at 7500 Blessing Ave. Applications for all three clinics open from 5:30-6:45 p.m.
  • Houston, Galveston and East Texas
    • Beacon Law
      • Sign up at the Beacon Day Center on Fridays between 7:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and ask for legal intake. Staff will gather basic information on your legal needs. This information will be screened for eligibility and conflicts at a later date and cases will be worked on a first come, first served basis.
    • Lone Star Legal Aid

  • Dallas/Fort Worth area, North Texas and Panhandle
  • San Antonio, Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi and West Texas
    • Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA)
      • To ask about legal assistance, call 888-988-9996.
      • Holds a driver’s license restoration clinic at Haven for Hope in San Antonio, located at 1 Haven for Hope Way, on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. For an appointment at this clinic, call 210-212-3749.
    • San Antonio Legal Services Association (SALSA)
      • SALSA offers various legal assistance clinics for veterans, cyberbullying victims, and other members of the community.
      • Hosts free legal assistance clinics for veterans and their families at the Veterans Outreach and Transition Center in San Antonio every second Friday from 1–4 p.m. Please bring all relevant documents pertaining to your legal issue to the clinic or your appointment.
